Hitler capitalized on economic woes, popular<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>discontent and political infighting to take absolute power in Germany beginning in 1933.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Germany\u2019s invasion of Poland in 1939 led to the outbreak of\u00a0World War II, and by 1941<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Nazi forces had occupied much of Europe. Hitler\u2019s virulent\u00a0anti-Semitism\u00a0and obsessive<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>pursuit of Aryan supremacy fueled the murder of some 6 million Jews, along with other<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>victims of the\u00a0Holocaust. After the tide of war turned against him, Hitler committed<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>suicide in a Berlin bunker in April 1945.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Nandasena Gotabaya Rajapaksa<\/span>, [11] \u00a0RWP,\u00a0RSP,\u00a0 psc ,\u00a0GR\u00a0(born 20 June 1949) is a\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>former\u00a0military officer\u00a0currently serving as the 8th\u00a0President of Sri Lanka\u00a0since 2019. He<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>has previously served as\u00a0Secretary\u00a0to the\u00a0Ministry of Defence and Urban<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Development\u00a0from 2005 to 2015 under the administration of his elder brother former<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>President\u00a0 Mahinda Rajapaksa , leading the\u00a0Sri Lankan Armed Forces\u00a0to the military<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>defeat of the\u00a0Tamil tigers, which ended the\u00a0Sri Lankan Civil War.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In 2018, he emerged as a possible candidate for the\u00a02019 presidential election,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>however due to the bad reputation of his brother Mahinda and the misdeeds of the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksha Family he had to make a case to be elected. For this he used the support<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>of the Islamic Terror Group of Zaharan Hashim that had links to the ISIS. This group<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>was also funded by the MOD during the time of Gotabaya in the pretext of taking them<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>as intelligence informers. This group executed a wave suicide attacks on the Catholic<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Churches and Star Class hotels in Colombo on the Easter Sunday of 2019 that left 400<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>dead and many injured and created a security instability in the country which he<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>successfully capitalized and contested on a pro-nationalistic, economic development<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and national security platform. He is the first person with military background to be<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>elected as President of Sri Lanka and also the first person to be elected president who<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>had not held an elected office prior.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In comparison with Hitler Gotabaya too capitalized on economic woes, popular<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>discontent and political infighting to take absolute power in Sri Lanka with 6.9 Million<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>voting in his favour.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Early Life<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Adolf Hitler\u00a0was born on April 20, 1889, in\u00a0Braunau\u00a0am Inn, a small Austrian town near<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the Austro-German frontier. After his father, Alois, retired as a state customs official,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>young Adolf spent most of his childhood in Linz, the capital of Upper Austria.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Not wanting to follow in his father\u2019s footsteps as a civil servant, he began struggling in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>secondary school and eventually dropped out. Alois died in 1903, and Adolf pursued his<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>dream of being an artist, though he was rejected from Vienna\u2019s Academy of Fine Arts.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>After his mother, Klara, died in 1908, Hitler moved to Vienna, where he pieced together<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>a living painting scenery and monuments and selling the images. Lonely, isolated and a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>voracious reader, Hitler became interested in politics during his years in Vienna, and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>developed many of the ideas that would shape Nazi ideology.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gotabaya Rajapaksa was born in Palatuwa in the\u00a0 Matara District ,\u00a0as the fifth of nine<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>siblings, and was brought up in\u00a0 Weeraketiya \u00a0in the southern<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>rural\u00a0district\u00a0of\u00a0 Hambantota . Born to a\u00a0prominent political family\u00a0from the\u00a0Southern<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Province, Rajapaksa was educated at\u00a0 Ananda College, Colombo \u00a0and joined the\u00a0Sri<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Lankan Army\u00a0in April 1971. Following basic training at the\u00a0Army Training Centre,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Diyatalawa, he was commissioned as\u00a0signals officer\u00a0and later transferred to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>several\u00a0infantry\u00a0 regiments He saw active service in the early stages of the\u00a0Sri Lankan<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Civil War\u00a0with the elite\u00a0 Gajaba Regiment , taking part in several major offensives such as<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the\u00a0 Vadamarachi Operation , Operation Strike Hard and\u00a0Operation Thrividha Balaya, as<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>well as\u00a0counter-insurgency operations\u00a0during the\u00a01987\u20131989 JVP insurrection.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>He took early retirement from the army and moved into the field of\u00a0information<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>technology, before immigrating to the\u00a0United States\u00a0in 1998. He returned to Sri Lanka in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2005, to assist his brother in his presidential campaign and was appointed Defence<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Secretary in his brother&amp;#39;s administration. During his tenure the Sri Lankan Armed Forces<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>successfully concluded the Sri Lankan Civil War defeating the\u00a0Tamil Tigers\u00a0and killing<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>its leader\u00a0 Velupillai Prabhakaran \u00a0in 2009. He was a target of an assassination attempt in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>December 2006 by a Tamil Tiger\u00a0suicide bomber. Following the war, Rajapaksa initiated<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>many urban development projects. He stepped down following the defeat of his brother<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>in the\u00a02015 Presidential election.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Military Career<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>In 1913, Hitler moved to Munich, in the German state of Bavaria. When\u00a0World War<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>I\u00a0broke out the following summer, he successfully petitioned the Bavarian king to be<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>allowed to volunteer in a reserve infantry regiment.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Deployed in October 1914 to Belgium, Hitler served throughout the Great War and won<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>two decorations for bravery, including the rare Iron Cross First Class, which he wore to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the end of his life.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hitler was wounded twice during the conflict: He was hit in the leg during the\u00a0Battle of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the Somme\u00a0in 1916, and temporarily blinded by a British gas attack near Ypres in 1918.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A month later, he was recuperating in a hospital at Pasewalk, northeast of Berlin, when<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>news arrived of the armistice and Germany\u2019s defeat in\u00a0World War I.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Like many Germans, Hitler came to believe the country\u2019s devastating defeat could be<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>attributed not to the Allies, but to insufficiently patriotic \u201ctraitors\u201d at home\u2014a myth that<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>would undermine the post-war\u00a0Weimar Republic\u00a0and set the stage for Hitler\u2019s rise.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksa joined the\u00a0Sri Lankan Army\u00a0as a\u00a0Cadet Officer\u00a0on 26 April 1971, when Sri<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Lanka was still a\u00a0dominion\u00a0of the\u00a0British Commonwealth\u00a0and was in the midst of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the\u00a01971 JVP insurrection. Following his basic officer training at the\u00a0Army Training<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Centre, Diyatalawa\u00a0in its 4th intake, he was commissioned as a\u00a0Second Lieutenant\u00a0on<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>26 May 1972, in the\u00a0Sri Lanka Signals Corps.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>During his 20 years of military service, Rajapaksa has received awards for gallantry<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>from three Presidents of Sri Lanka,\u00a0J.R. Jayewardene,\u00a0 Ranasinghe<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Premadasa \u00a0and\u00a0D.B. Wijetunga. These include the gallantry medals,\u00a0 Rana Wickrama<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Padakkama \u00a0and\u00a0 Rana Sura Padakkama .<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gotabaya disgracefully used the Buddhist Clergy and certain politicians of his party to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>make a wave of attacks and allegations to the Muslims whilst the then government of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Sirisena and Ranil remained desperate. Following Hitler\u2019s footsteps Gotabaya created a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>fear among the Muslims and took their loyalty by force. This was seen when the voting<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>for the 20 th Amendment was taken on the 22 nd evening in the parliament.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">Political Life<\/span> ( this is important and given in detail)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>After Hitler returned to Munich in late 1918, he joined the small German Workers\u2019 Party,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>which aimed to unite the interests of the working class with a strong German<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>nationalism. His skilled oratory and charismatic energy helped propel him in the party\u2019s<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ranks, and in 1920 he left the army and took charge of its propaganda efforts.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In one of Hitler\u2019s strokes of propaganda genius, the newly renamed\u00a0National Socialist<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>German Workers Party, or\u00a0Nazi Party, adopted a version of the ancient symbol of the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>hakenkreuz, or hooked cross, as its emblem. Printed in a white circle on a red<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>background, Hitler\u2019s swastika would take on terrifying symbolic power in the years to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>come.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>By the end of 1921, Hitler led the growing Nazi Party, capitalizing on widespread<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>discontent with the Weimar Republic and the punishing terms of the\u00a0Versailles Treaty.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Many dissatisfied former army officers in Munich would join the Nazis, notably Ernst<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>R\u00f6hm, who recruited the \u201cstrong arm\u201d squads\u2014known as the Sturmabteilung<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>(SA)\u2014which Hitler used to protect party meetings and attack opponents.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>On the evening of November 8, 1923, members of the SA and others forced their way<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>into a large beer hall where another right-wing leader was addressing the crowd.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Wielding a revolver, Hitler proclaimed the beginning of a national revolution and led<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>marchers to the center of Munich, where they got into a gun battle with police.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hitler fled quickly, but he and other rebel leaders were later arrested. Even though it<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>failed spectacularly, the\u00a0Beer Hall Putsch\u00a0established Hitler as a national figure, and (in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the eyes of many) a hero of right-wing nationalism.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Tried for treason, Hitler was sentenced to five years in prison, but would serve only nine<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>months in the relative comfort of Landsberg Castle. During this period, he began to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>dictate the book that would become &amp;quot;Mein Kampf&amp;quot; (\u201cMy Struggle\u201d), the first volume of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>which was published in 1925.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In it, Hitler expanded on the nationalistic, anti-Semitic views he had begun to develop in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Vienna in his early twenties, and laid out plans for the Germany\u2014and the world\u2014he<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>sought to create when he came to power.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hitler would finish the second volume of &amp;quot;Mein Kampf&amp;quot; after his release, while relaxing<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>in the mountain village of Berchtesgaden. It sold modestly at first, but with Hitler\u2019s rise it<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>became Germany\u2019s best-selling book after the Bible. By 1940, it had sold some 6 million<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>copies there.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hitler\u2019s second book, \u201cThe Zweites Buch,\u201d was written in 1928 and contained his<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>thoughts on foreign policy. It was not published in his lifetime due to the poor initial<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>sales of \u201cMein Kampf.\u201d The first English translations of \u201cThe Zweites Buch\u201d did not<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>appear until 1962 and was published under the title \u201cHitler&amp;#39;s Secret Book.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Obsessed with race and the idea of ethnic \u201cpurity,\u201d Hitler saw a natural order that placed<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the so-called \u201cAryan race\u201d at the top.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>For him, the unity of the Volk (the German people) would find its truest<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>incarnation not in democratic or parliamentary government, but in one supreme<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>leader, or F\u00fchrer.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>&amp;quot;Mein Kampf&amp;quot;\u00a0also addressed the need for Lebensraum (or living space): In order to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>fulfill its destiny, Germany should take over lands to the east that were now occupied by<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cinferior\u201d Slavic peoples\u2014including Austria, the Sudetenland (Czechoslovakia), Poland<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and Russia.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>By the time Hitler left prison, economic recovery had restored some popular support for<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the Weimar Republic, and support for right-wing causes like Nazism appeared to be<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>waning.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Over the next few years, Hitler laid low and worked on reorganizing and reshaping the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Nazi Party. He established\u00a0the\u00a0Hitler Youth\u00a0to organize youngsters, and created<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the\u00a0 Schutzstaffel (SS) \u00a0as a more reliable alternative to the SA.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Members of the SS wore black uniforms and swore a personal oath of loyalty to Hitler.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>(After 1929, under the leadership of\u00a0Heinrich Himmler, the SS would develop from a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>group of some 200 men into a force that would dominate Germany and terrorize the rest<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>of occupied Europe during\u00a0World War II.)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In 1932, Hitler ran against the war hero\u00a0Paul von Hindenburg\u00a0for president, and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>received 36.8 percent of the vote. With the government in chaos, three successive<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>chancellors failed to maintain control, and in late January 1933 Hindenburg named the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>43-year-old Hitler as chancellor, capping the stunning rise of an unlikely leader.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>January 30, 1933 marked the birth of the Third Reich, or as the Nazis called it, the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cThousand-Year Reich\u201d (after Hitler\u2019s boast that it would endure for a millennium).<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Though the Nazis never attained more than 37 percent of the vote at the height of their<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>popularity in 1932, Hitler was able to grab absolute power in Germany largely due to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>divisions and inaction among the majority who opposed Nazism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>After a devastating fire at Germany\u2019s parliament building, the Reichstag, in February<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>1933\u2014possibly the work of a Dutch communist, though later evidence suggested Nazis<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>set the\u00a0Reichstag fire\u00a0themselves\u2014Hitler had an excuse to step up the political<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>oppression and violence against his opponents.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>On March 23, the Reichstag passed the Enabling Act, giving full powers to Hitler<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and celebrating the union of National Socialism with the old German<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>establishment (i.e.,\u00a0Hindenburg).<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>That July, the government passed a law stating that the Nazi Party \u201cconstitutes the only<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>political party in Germany,\u201d and within months all non-Nazi parties, trade unions and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>other organizations had ceased to exist.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>His autocratic power now secure within Germany, Hitler turned his eyes toward the rest<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>of Europe.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hitler&amp;#39;s Foreign Policy\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In 1933, Germany was diplomatically isolated, with a weak military and hostile<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>neighbors (France and Poland). In a famous speech in May 1933, Hitler struck a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>surprisingly conciliatory tone, claiming Germany supported disarmament and peace.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>But behind this appeasement strategy, the domination and expansion of the Volk<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>remained Hitler\u2019s overriding aim.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>By early the following year, he had withdrawn Germany from the\u00a0League of Nations\u00a0and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>begun to militarize the nation in anticipation of his plans for territorial conquest.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Night of the Long Knives<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>On June 29, 1934, the infamous\u00a0Night of the Long Knives, Hitler had R\u00f6hm, former<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Chancellor Kurt von Schleicher and hundreds of other problematic members of his own<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>party murdered, in particular troublesome members of the SA.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>When the 86-year-old Hindenburg died on August 2, military leaders agreed to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>combine the presidency and chancellorship into one position, meaning Hitler<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>would command all the armed forces of the Reich.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Persecution of Jews<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On September 15, 1935, passage of the\u00a0Nuremberg Laws\u00a0deprived Jews of German<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>citizenship, and barred them from marrying or having relations with persons of \u201cGerman<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>or related blood.\u201d<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Though the Nazis attempted to downplay its persecution of Jews in order to placate the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>international community during the 1936 Berlin Olympics (in which German-Jewish<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>athletes were not allowed to compete), additional decrees over the next few years<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>disenfranchised Jews and took away their political and civil rights.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In addition to its pervasive anti-Semitism, Hitler\u2019s government also sought to establish<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the cultural dominance of Nazism by burning books, forcing newspapers out of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>business, using radio and movies for propaganda purposes and forcing teachers<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>throughout Germany\u2019s educational system to join the party.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Much of the Nazi persecution of Jews and other targets occurred at the hands of the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Geheime Staatspolizei (GESTAPO), or Secret State Police, an arm of the SS that<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>expanded during this period.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In March 1936, against the advice of his generals, Hitler ordered German troops to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>reoccupy the demilitarized left bank of the Rhine.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Over the next two years, Germany concluded alliances with Italy and Japan, annexed<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Austria and moved against Czechoslovakia\u2014all essentially without resistance from<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Great Britain, France or the rest of the international community.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Once he confirmed the alliance with Italy in the so-called\u00a0\u201cPact of Steel\u201d\u00a0in May 1939,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hitler then signed a non-aggression pact with the\u00a0Soviet Union. On September 1, 1939,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Nazi troops invaded Poland, finally prompting Britain and France to declare war on<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Germany.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Blitzkrieg\u00a0<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>After ordering the occupation of Norway and Denmark in April 1940, Hitler adopted a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>plan proposed by one of his generals to attack France through the Ardennes Forest.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>The blitzkrieg (\u201clightning war\u201d) attack began on May 10; Holland quickly surrendered,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>followed by Belgium.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>German troops made it all the way to the English Channel, forcing British and French<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>forces to evacuate en masse from\u00a0Dunkirk\u00a0in late May. On June 22, France was forced<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>to sign an armistice with Germany.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Hitler had hoped to force Britain to seek peace as well, but when that failed he went<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>ahead with his attacks on that country, followed by an invasion of the Soviet Union in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>June 1941.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>After the attack on\u00a0Pearl Harbor\u00a0that December, the United States declared war on<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Japan, and Germany\u2019s alliance with Japan demanded that Hitler declare war on the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>United States as well.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>At that point in the conflict, Hitler shifted his central strategy to focus on breaking the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>alliance of his main opponents (Britain, the United States and the Soviet Union) by<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>forcing one of them to make peace with him.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beginning in 1933, the SS had operated a network of concentration camps, including a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>notorious camp at\u00a0Dachau, near Munich, to hold Jews and other targets of the Nazi<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>regime.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>After war broke out, the Nazis shifted from expelling Jews from German-controlled<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>territories to exterminating them. Einsatzgruppen, or mobile death squads, executed<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>entire Jewish communities during the Soviet invasion, while the existing concentration-<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>camp network expanded to include death camps like\u00a0Auschwitz-Birkenau in occupied<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Poland.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In addition to forced labor and mass execution, certain Jews at Auschwitz were targeted<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>as the subjects of horrific medical experiments carried out by eugenicist Josef Mengele,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>known as the \u201cAngel of Death.\u201d\u00a0 Mengele\u2019s experiments \u00a0focused on twins and exposed<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>3,000 child prisoners to disease, disfigurement and torture under the guise of medical<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>research.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Though the Nazis also imprisoned and killed Catholics, homosexuals, political<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>dissidents, Roma (gypsies) and the disabled, above all they targeted Jews\u2014some 6<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>million of whom were killed in German-occupied Europe by war\u2019s end.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Assassination attempts<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With defeats at\u00a0El-Alamein\u00a0and Stalingrad, as well as the landing of U.S. troops in North<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Africa by the end of 1942, the tide of the war turned against Germany.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>As the conflict continued, Hitler became increasingly unwell, isolated and\u00a0dependent on<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>medications\u00a0administered by his personal physician.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Several attempts were made on his life, including one that came close to succeeding in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>July 1944, when Col.\u00a0Claus von Stauffenberg\u00a0planted a bomb that exploded during a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>conference at Hitler\u2019s headquarters in East Prussia.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Within a few months of the successful\u00a0Allied invasion of Normandy\u00a0in June 1944, the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Allies had begun liberating cities across Europe. That December, Hitler attempted to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>direct another offensive through the Ardennes, trying to split British and American<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>forces.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>But after January 1945, he holed up in a bunker beneath the Chancellery in Berlin. With<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Soviet forces closing in, Hitler made plans for a last-ditch resistance before finally<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>abandoning that plan.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In order to assist his brother&amp;#39;s presidential election campaign, Rajapaksa returned to Sri<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Lanka from the United States in 2005. He obtained dual citizenship from Sri Lanka but<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>kept his US citizenship. Gotabaya Rajapaksa was appointed to the post of\u00a0Permanent<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Secretary\u00a0of the\u00a0Ministry of Defence\u00a0in November 2005 by newly elected President<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Mahinda Rajapaksa. In this capacity, he oversaw the military operation which eventually<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>defeated the LTTE in May 2009.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>With his position, Rajapaksa also pursued projects like the Colombo Beautification<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Project, which revitalised public centers and parks in\u00a0Colombo,\u00a0as well as many other<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>development projects focused on places such as\u00a0 Battaramulla \u00a0 Diyatha Uyana , Ape<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gama Park, Wetland Park,\u00a0 Nugegoda ,\u00a0Arcade Independence Square,\u00a0 Weras Ganga<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Park \u00a0and\u00a0 Defence Headquarters Complex . In 2011, the Ministry of Defense was<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>renamed to the Ministry of Defense and Urban Development, having absorbed<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>responsibilities related to urban development.\u00a0Results of his work were remarkable as<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Colombo became to the top of the list of fast developing cities in the world in 2015 by an<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>annual travel study by MasterCard.<\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Assassination attempt<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>On 1 December 2006, at approximately 10:35 an assassin attempted to drive an<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>explosive-laden\u00a0auto-rikshaw\u00a0into Rajapaksa&amp;#39;s motorcade as it traveled<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>through\u00a0 Kollupitiya , Colombo. The\u00a0Sri Lanka Army Commandos\u00a0guarding him<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>obstructed the vehicle carrying the explosives before it reached Rajapakse&amp;#39;s vehicle and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>two commandos were instantly killed. Rajapaksa escaped unhurt.\u00a0The LTTE were<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>blamed for the attack. However there is a best kept secret that the attack was carried<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>out by the Colonl Karuna and the team to obtain sympathy to Gotabaya and support for<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Mahinda.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Karuna defection<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gotabhaya is credited with using the\u00a0 Karuna faction \u00a0effectively during the war to defeat<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the LTTE. The former\u00a0LTTE\u00a0commander Vinayagamoorthi Muralitharan, better known<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>as\u00a0Colonel Karuna, told British authorities that Rajapaksa was instrumental in arranging<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>for him to be issued with a false diplomatic passport so that he could flee to Britain in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>September 2007. These allegations were denied by the Sri Lankan Foreign<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Minister\u00a0 Rohitha Bogollagama \u00a0at the time,\u00a0and later by Rajapaksa. Karuna defected<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>during the time of 2002 -2004 peace talks and Ranil Wickremasinghe was responsible<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>for this very important defection.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Criticism of the United Nations and western countries<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gotabaya Rajapaksa during an official tour of\u00a0Brazil n June 2007, Rajapaksa was severely<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>critical of the\u00a0United Nations\u00a0(UN) and of western governments. He accused the UN of having<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>been infiltrated by terrorists &amp;quot;for 30 years or so&amp;quot;, and as a result the UN was fed incorrect<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>information. He also alleged that Britain and the EU were bullying Sri Lanka, and concluded that<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Sri Lanka &amp;quot;does not need them&amp;quot;, and that they don&amp;#39;t provide any significant amount of aid to the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>country.\u00a0Ironically in 1990 his brother Mahinda Rajapaksa was caught attempting to bring<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>evidence of human rights violations to the United Nations Commission on Human Rights and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the evidence was confiscated by the government during which Rajapaksa justified foreign<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>intervention in Sri Lankan affairs. The person that demanded western nations to limit and put<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>conditions on foreign aid was also Mahinda Rajapaksa.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Controversies<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Human Rights Violations<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>On 3 February 2009, Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa stated to the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>international media (in reference to the only hospital in the war front being shelled), that<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>everything is a legitimate target if it is not within the safe zone the government has<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>created and that all persons subject to attack by the armed forces were legitimate LTTE<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>targets as there are no independent observers, only LTTE sympathisers, radio<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>announcements were made and movement of civilians started a month and a half ago.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>As per Wikileaks, General Sarath Fonseka who led the war against LTTE had accused<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa of ordering at the end of the war the shooting<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>of any LTTE leaders who might try to surrender under flags of truce. But Mr. Gotabhaya<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>alleged to have threaten to execute Mr. Fonseka if he had spilled any war secrets.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In an interview on the Sri Lanka TV channel\u00a0 Ada Derana \u00a0on 16 March 2015, Rajapaksa<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>stated that he is a citizen of the United States but cannot travel to the United States<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>because of alleged war crimes charges against him.\u00a0However, Rajapaksa visited the<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>United States in 2016 and two Tamil groups have urged the United States government<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>to arrest and prosecute him. Sri Lankan government rejected to support the call to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>arrest Rajapaksa by Tamil groups.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>As reported by\u00a0The Sunday Leader, Major General Prasad Samarasinghe, the former<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>military spokesman and director of the Directorate of Media in the army, has been<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>passing highly sensitive information to the US Embassy in Colombo on abductions.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Many of those abducted were believed to have been individuals who had fallen foul of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the Rajapaksa trio, Mahinda, Basil and Gotabhaya. During her visit to the country,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>United Nations Human Rights Commissioner\u00a0 Navanetham Pillay \u00a0expressed her<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>disappointment over \u201cwhite van\u201d related disappearances reported in Colombo, and other<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>parts of the country, which were not covered by the Commission of Inquiry on<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Disappearances set up by the government.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Investigations on the 2008 abduction of journalist Keith Noyahr resulted in a White Van<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>being discovered in 2017 March from a house at Piliyandala with connections to an<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Army Major that was believed to have been used for the abduction. Police believes that<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the van may have been used for other crimes as well as being part of the operation to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>murder Lasantha Wickrematunge.\u00a0A few weeks after the Keith noyahr abduction in 2008<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Namal Perera a course coordinator at the Sri Lanka College of Journalism was violently<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>attacked by a gang that came in the same White Van with a fake number plate and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>attempted to abduct him after attacking his car but was foiled by residents and heavy<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>traffic. Namal Perera identified two of his would-be-killers Duminda Weeraratne and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Hemachandra Perera in April 2017.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Bandara Bulathwatte was a key suspect in the murder of Lasantha was given a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>diplomatic post in Thailand at the request of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa near the 2010<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>presidential election. The letter sent bt Gotabhaya was prepared in haste and even a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>bio data of Bulathwatte was not attached despite it being a requirement for him to get<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>his visa and have the appointment regularised by the foreign ministry. But after the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>elections, Gotabhaya requested his departure to be postponed claiming an urgent<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>matter regarding national security. Technical evidence and telephone records have<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>placed Bulathwatte at the location where Lasantha was killed as well as in the places<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>where other journalists were attacked.Investigations on assassinations, abductions and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>assaults on journalist after the fall of the Rajapaksa government revealed that<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gotabhaya directed a\u00a0death squad\u00a0to attack journalists that was outside the Army<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>command structure during this time 17 journalists and media workers were killed and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>others were either assaulted or abducted.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Nadarajah Raviraj, a well-known human-rights lawyer and a parliamentarian, was shot<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and killed in\u00a0Colombo\u00a0on 10 November 2006. At a magisterial hearing in Colombo on 26<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>February 2016, Liyanarachchi Abeyrathna, a former police officer attached to the State<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Intelligence Agency, stated that Gotabhaya Rajapaksa paid Rs. 50\u00a0million to an<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>organisation led by\u00a0Colonel Karuna\u00a0to murder Mr. Raviraj.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Relationship with the media<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksa has been accused of threatening journalists on several occasions, including<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>telling two journalists attached to the state-owned Lake House Publications that unless<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>they stop criticising the armed forces &amp;quot;what will happen to you is beyond my control&amp;quot;.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>When asked by the two journalists if he was threatening them, he replied &amp;quot;I am definitely<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>not threatening your lives. Our services are appreciated by 99 per cent of the people.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>They love the Army Commander (General\u00a0 Sarath Fonseka ) and the Army. There are Sri<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Lankan patriots who love us do and will do what is required if necessary.&amp;quot;\u00a0In April 2007<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>he was accused of allegedly calling the Editor of the\u00a0Daily Mirror\u00a0Champika<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Liyanaarachchi and threatening her, saying that she would escape reprisals only if she<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>resigned.\u00a0He was also accused for threatening to &amp;quot;exterminate&amp;quot; the\u00a0Daily<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Mirror\u00a0journalist Uditha Jayasinghe for writing articles about the plight of civilian war<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>casualties.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>A 5 December 2008 story from\u00a0The New York Times\u00a0quoted his news reporting position<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>as &amp;quot;he insists that journalists should not be allowed to report anything that demoralises<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the war effort&amp;quot;.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In the editorial titled\u00a0A brother out of control\u00a0(16 August 2011),\u00a0The Hindu\u00a0raised the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>observation, &amp;quot;President Rajapaksa would be well advised to distance himself swiftly<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>from his brother&amp;#39;s stream-of-consciousness on sensitive issues that are not his<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>business. This includes an outrageous comment that because a Tamil woman, an<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>\u201cLTTE cadre\u201d who was a British national, interviewed in the Channel 4 documentary<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>was \u201cso attractive\u201d but had been neither raped nor killed by Sri Lankan soldiers, the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>allegation of sexual assault by soldiers could not be true. For this statement alone, Mr.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gotabaya Rajapaksa must be taken to task.&amp;quot;<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In May 2015, The Sunday Leader tendered an unconditional apology to Gotabhaya<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksa for a series of articles regarding the purchase of MIG 27 airplanes for the\u00a0Sri<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Lanka Air Force.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Corruption<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>Deceased MP\u00a0 Sripathi Sooriyarachchi , assassinated journalist\u00a0 Lasantha<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Wickrematunge , suspicious death of Dr. Amith Munidradasa who headed Military<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Procurement and others had accused Rajapaksa of corruption since 2006.\u00a0In<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2015\u00a0Interpol\u00a0provided further evidence to the Sri Lankan government on corrupt<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>military procurements.\u00a0In March 2015 a Sri Lankan court imposed a travel ban on<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Rajapaksa over allegations he used a commercial\u00a0floating armory\u00a0as a private<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>arsenal.The travel ban was lifted by the court in December 2016.\u00a0UNP MP Mangala<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Samaraweera claimed that Gotabaya&amp;#39;s son illegally occupied a house rented for a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>consulate in Los Angeles and caused millions of rupees in losses to the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>state.Rajapaksa rejected the allegations regarding occupying a house rented for a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>consulate in LA.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Alleged Assassination Plot<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>In September 2018 Director of the Anti Corruption Movement revealed a conspiracy to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>assassinate President\u00a0 Maithripala Sirisena \u00a0and former Defence Secretary Gotabaya<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksa because the duo are against the drug trade.\u00a0CID of Sri Lanka<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Police\u00a0investigated the issue. It has now come to light that this is a hoax created by the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksha\u2019s to divert the attention of the CID and other intelligence units and create a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>hurricane within that will allow them to peacefully carry out the Easter Attack to achieve<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>their objective.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Presidential campaign<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>It was widely speculated and even claimed by several politicians that Gotabhaya<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksa would be contesting the 2020 elections. However, this was denied by<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksa but claimed that he will accept if he was offered the candidacy. His<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>acceptance came days after the Easter Attack. The Easter Attack was planned by the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksha Brothers to create an atmosphere that they could bring in Gotabaya as a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>potential candidate based on Islamic Terrorism.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>United States Lawsuits<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>In April 2019, Ahimsa Wickrematunge, the daughter of\u00a0 Lasantha Wickrematunge , filed a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>lawsuit against Rajapaksa in the state of California. Rajapaksa, while on vacation in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the\u00a0United States, was served notice of two civil lawsuits. In October 2019, the court in<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>California rejected the case based on lack of jurisdiction to consider Wickrematunge&amp;#39;s<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>claims, because, in the Court&amp;#39;s view, Rajapaksa is entitled to common law foreign<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>official immunity for the alleged acts of torture,\u00a0extrajudicial killing, and crimes against<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>humanity.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>In May 2019 former Ambassador to Sri Lanka and Assistant Secretary of State for<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>South and Central Asia in the Obama Administration,\u00a0Robert O. Blake Jr., praised<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksa on the management of the intelligence services during and post war.\u00a0On 26<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>April 2019 he confirmed that he will be contesting the presidential election, following the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>deadly\u00a0Easter Sunday bombings.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>On 11 August 2019,\u00a0Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna\u00a0led by former president\u00a0 Mahinda<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapaksa \u00a0announced that Rajapaksa will be their candidate for the\u00a02019 Presidential<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>election.\u00a0Rajapaksa campaigned on a pro-nationalistic, economic development and<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>national security platform in which he gained 6,924,255 votes, which was 52.25% of the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>total cased votes and 1,360,016 votes majority over\u00a0New Democratic<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Front\u00a0candidate\u00a0 Sajith Premadasa . Rajapaksa won a majority in the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>predominant\u00a0Sinhalese\u00a0areas of the island which included the districts of Kalutara,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Galle, Matara, Hambantota, Monaragala, Ratnapura, Badulla, Kurunegala, Puttalam,<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gampaha, Kandy, Matale, Polonnaruwa Colombo, Kegalle and Anuradhapura, while<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Premadasa gained a majority in areas dominated by\u00a0Tamil\u00a0and\u00a0Muslim\u00a0minorities, which<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>had been effected by the civil war.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #ff0000;\"><strong>Citizenship row<\/strong><\/span><br \/>\n<strong>During the campaign, several political parties including then ruling\u00a0United National<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Party\u00a0accused him of having American citizenship and claimed that he stayed and lived<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>in America for more than ten years and revealed that he was not a Sri Lankan citizen.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gotabhaya was also pressured to not to contest at the Presidential elections because of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>holding dual citizenship. Further he was alleged to have carried a duplicate Sri Lankan<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>passport with him and court cases were pending against him over the citizenship issue<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>and the issue regarding his passport.Former President and the elder brother of<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Gotabhaya,\u00a0 Mahinda Rajapaksa \u00a0was also accused of using his executive powers to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>grant his brother, the Sri Lankan citizenship after commencing his first term as president<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>in November 2005. Jayasundera\u00a0as Secretary to the President (the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Supreme Court has ordered that he cannot hold any public office) and\u00a0Major<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>General\u00a0Kamal Gunaratne\u00a0as Secretary of Defence, as well as a new Secretary of the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Treasury and the Secretary to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.\u00a0On 20 November, Prime<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Minister\u00a0 Ranil Wickremesinghe \u00a0had agreed to resign for Rajapaksa to form a caretaker<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>government until fresh parliamentary elections can be held after the President can<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>constitutionally dissolve parliament in March 2020. On the same day, the presidential<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>secretariat called for all\u00a0provincial governors\u00a0to tender their resignations.\u00a0On 21<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>November, he appointed his brother\u00a0 Mahinda Rajapaksa \u00a0as Prime Minister following the<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>resignation of\u00a0 Ranil Wickremesinghe \u00a0and the day after appointed a\u00a015 member Cabinet<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>of Ministers.\u00a0Thus, Sri Lanka became only the second nation in the world after\u00a0Poland\u00a0to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>have a combination of brothers taking charge as president and Prime Minister of a<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>country at the same occasion.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>After a few months in power, Rajapaksa had to face his biggest challenge. The\u00a0COVID-<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>19 pandemic in Sri Lanka\u00a0started in March 2020. Rajapakse at first refused to lock down<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>the country but later decided to impose a curfew when a number of cases began to<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>rise.\u00a0Rajapaksa dissolved parliament on 2 March. The election was initially put on by<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>Rajapakse on 25 April 2020, was then postponed by the election commission to 20<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>June 2020.<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>2020 Sri Lankan Parliamentary Election<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>General Election was held on 5 August 2020.\u00a0Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna\u00a0(SLPP)<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>was able to secure landslide victory in the election claiming the majority winning 145<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>seats out of 225 seats. Main opposition party\u00a0 Samagi Jana Balawegaya \u00a0won just 54<\/strong><br \/>\n<strong>seats.
