{"id":19769,"date":"2023-08-31T18:05:00","date_gmt":"2023-08-31T17:05:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lankadawasa.com?p=19769"},"modified":"2023-08-31T18:05:33","modified_gmt":"2023-08-31T17:05:33","slug":"high-court-punishes-the-chief-inspector-of-police-for-perjury","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lankadawasa.com?p=19769","title":{"rendered":"High Court punishes the Chief Inspector of Police for perjury"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<ul>\n<li>Vavuniya High Court recently ordered a one-and-a-half-year prison<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sentence suspended for seven years to Roshan Sanjeeva, a chief police<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>inspector who gave false evidence in a trial held before the court,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>and to pay a compensation of 500,000 rupees to the aggrieved party.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On March 30, 2011, the jeep driven by the then Member of Parliament<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jeyaratnam Sri Ranga met with an accident and the police sergeant<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>attached to the ministerial security division who was traveling died.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The Vavuniya High Court Judge sentenced the then Settikulama Police<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>officer, Inspector P.R Sanjeeva, who admitted, he had given false<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>evidence to the court that the vehicle was driven by the deceased<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>police officer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The sentence was given by the Vavuniya High Court to the former<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Settikulam OIC who pleaded guilty when the case was called on the 8th.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Jeyaratnam Sri Ranga, a journalist, later became a Member of<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Parliament of the UNP. The unregistered car he was driving met with an<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>accident at Vavuniya Settikulam area and during the accident police<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Sergeant Pushpakumara, who was deployed to protect the MP, died inside<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the car.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Following this accident the Settikulama police OIC fabricated evidence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>that the car was not driven by the MP and that it was the deceased<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>police sergeant who drove the vehicle. Later the deceased police<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>sergeant&#8217;s wife made a complaint to the then Inspector General of<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Police N. Ilangakon. In the investigation conducted it was revealed,<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>under the influence of several senior police officers, the Settikulama<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>police OIC has submitted false information.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>During further investigation conducted by the Police it has been<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>revealed that the Settikulama police OIC has acted illegally during<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the accident on the instructions of Mahinda Balasuriya, who was the<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Inspector General of Police. However, OIC Roshan Sanjeeva, has raised<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>his concern to the IGP Mahinda Balasuriya. IGP Mahinda Balasuriya had<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>called the OIC Roshan Sanjeewa to Colombo and deployed an acting OIC<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>to the Settikulam and and changed the police record books by altering<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the evidence as it was the deceased Sergeant Pushpakumara who drove<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>ministers vehicle and met with the accident.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>It was revealed even the police record books had been changed. But<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Roshan Sanjeewa, who worked as the OIC, was charged of vicarious<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>liability. The sergeant, who changed the police records and presented<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>a false B report to the court was also accused for\u00a0 changing the<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>information and evidence notes. Accordingly two police officers work<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>were suspended.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>As a case was filed against these officers in the Vavuniya High Court<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>for reporting false statements to the court and accusing them for<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>aiding and abetting, the then Inspector General of Police N.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ilangakoon suspended their work.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>In 2019, after the files of the investigation conducted by the Police<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Investigation Unit were forwarded to the Attorney General, the<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Attorney General instructed the Senior Superintendent of Police, who<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>was working under the Vavuniya Police Division during the accident and<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>the the OIC of Settikulam Police, and six suspects, including MP Sri<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Ranga, to be arrested and brought to court. Accordingly, these six<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>suspects have appeared in court.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Police Inspector Roshan Sanjeeva, who was under suspension due to the<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>misconduct caused by the Inspector General of Police, admitted that he<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>had given false evidence to the court, although he protested the<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>incident of changing the information of the police but admitted that<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>he gave false testimony to the court.
